Vernon Ray Young
Mr. Vernon Ray Young, was called into eternal life on Thursday, February 17, 2005 in Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island. Vernon was born in Jacksonville, Texas, January 13, 1949. He was the son of Mrs. Mary L. Young and the late Columbus Fry. At the age of thirteen (13) he accepted the Lord and joined the church.
He started signing at the age of 3. People would give him quartets to hear him sing. He joined the glee club in elementary school and went on to receive many awards during his school years. Vernon's school affiliations were in Houston, Texas, where he was raised. He attended Texas Southern University where he majored in music. Vernon joined The Original Drifters in the early 1990s where he performed as one of the leading vocalist until his passing while on tour with the group in Georgetown, Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.
He also sang with the Gospel Drifters and can be heard leading various song on the Gospel Drifters' CD titled "Peace In The Valley" and on the CD "Fire Is Coming." He previously worked with The Outlaws of Houston, Texas, Archie Bell and The Drells, and Vernon Young and The Touchtones of Columbia, SC.
He leaves to cherish pervious memories: his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Madeline Corbett Young; his devoted sons, Brain Young and Michael Ross, all of Columbia, SC; his mother, Mrs. Mary L. Young; two sisters, Ms. Rebecca Oscar and Ms. Mae McNeil, all of Houston, TX; one brother, Bruce Young; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; and dear friends. Vernon was preceded in death by his father, Columbus Fry; and one brother William Castleberry.
