Born Rufus Wilkerson Welch, Jr. on September 28, 1939 in Norfolk, Virginia, he was known to his many loved ones and friends as “Bumpsie.” He was the son of Sara W. Welch and the late Rufus W. Welch, Sr. Bumpsie slipped peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, May 9, 2003 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.
He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Baptized at an early age, Bumpsie devoted his life to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ through song. He moved to Columbia South Carolina, where he owned and operated Bumpsie’s Got It Records.” He was the founder and manger of the gospel quartet group “Bumpsie and the Gospel Redeemers.”
He enjoyed playing and singing gospel music. He hosted a gospel music radio program on Saturday and Sunday mornings on WTGH 620 AM, Columbia, South Carolina.
He was a member of the Eureka Lodge #14 Scottish Rite Masons, the Palmetto Elks Club and many other organizations. He loved children and was always surrounded by them. He loved giving of himself and helping others. He was a friend to all and a stranger to none.
